Premium Rate Customer Service Numbers May be Banned
The Government has announced legislation that, from next summer, will bar customer help lines from charging more than the basic rate of a phone call for questions or complaints.
Under the new regs., 084x and 087x numbers for customer inquiries and complaints will become illegal.
However, watchdogs called for ministers to go further after it emerged that the draft proposals will permit banks, train operators, airlines and government departments to continue to charge premium call rates of up to 41p a minute.
The draft law is based (couldn’t we guess!) on a new European Union directive tackling premium-rate charges for customers wishing to make complaints. Companies will still be able to charge the higher rates when customers are purchasing goods or services.
